PUE (Power Usage Effectiveness) is the industry-standard metric for data centre energy efficiency, defined by The Green Grid. A perfect PUE of 1.0 means 100% of incoming power reaches IT equipment with zero overhead: physically impossible, but the goal to approach. Modern hyperscale facilities achieve 1.1–1.2; a well-managed enterprise data centre should target below 1.5. Older facilities often run above 2.0, meaning more than half the energy bill goes to cooling, lighting and power distribution rather than computing. DCiE (Data Centre Infrastructure Efficiency) is simply the reciprocal expressed as a percentage, a PUE of 1.5 equals a DCiE of 66.7%.
