About this tool

Bandwidth planning underpins network design, WAN circuit sizing, and cloud connectivity decisions. The concurrent users model multiplies per-user peak consumption by the number of simultaneous users and a utilization factor, this is the most common method for sizing corporate internet egress and SD-WAN links. The data volume model converts a transfer requirement (e.g. nightly backup to cloud) into a minimum sustained throughput: Mbps = (data in bits) ÷ (seconds in window). In both cases, always provision 20–30% headroom above the calculated figure to absorb burst traffic and avoid saturation. At 100% utilisation, TCP retransmission and queuing delays degrade application performance significantly.
