Backup Storage Sizing

Estimate how much storage your backup strategy requires: accounting for full backups, incrementals, retention policy, and deduplication.

Size of one complete backup of your data set.
% of data that changes each day.

About this tool

This calculator models a common enterprise backup topology: one initial full backup, daily incremental backups (sized as a percentage of the full), plus additional periodic full backups for weekly, monthly and yearly retention. The dedup/compression ratio accounts for modern backup software (Veeam, Commvault, Rubrik, etc.) that inline-deduplicates and compresses before writing to the target. Results are a planning estimate: actual storage depends on data type (databases deduplicate less well than files), backup software efficiency, and whether backups are local, disk-to-disk, or cloud-tiered. Add 10–20% overhead for catalog/metadata and target utilization headroom.
